FABRIC CANVAS

This project is brought to you by Palava Staff Member - Zoe

"I love the Palava style but my favourite thing is the fabrics, the illustration, the artwork!

I bought the Green Seaside fabric to make cushion covers but wanted to do more with it as I had plenty of the border left over. I had some old small canvases and thought the border would make a lovely canvas."

TO MAKE YOUR OWN YOU WILL NEED

An old framed canvas.

A piece of fabric large enough to cover the canvas.

A flat ended screwdriver or staple remover.

A staple gun.

1. First find some old canvasses you'd like to re-use.

2. Next - using a flat ended screwdriver, or a staple remover - get rid of all the staples holding the old canvas in place. Also remove the hanging bracket(s) and save for later once the new print is on.

4. Choose the section of fabric you want to use, then cut it to size but leave enough fabric to fold over so the edges don't fray, I used a thin plain fabric as backing as well, just to make the print stand out a bit more, you might not need that it depends on the fabric.

4. Flip it all over.

5. Make sure the print is straight before stapling, start at the bottom in the centre, once the bottom line is straight and stapled in place pull the fabric tight to the top centre, stretch it as much as you can but fold it over so no raw edges are on the outside.

6. You will need to fold in the corners to do the sides, mine is a bit chunky and not very neat because of the backing but no one will see that side. At this point you can also screw the hanging bracket back on too.

7. Because it's fabric I would treat it like a canvas and put a lacquer on it, there are lots about, hobby lacquer goes on any surface and means you can clean it and keep it free of dust and marks.

9. I love the finished piece, I bought the Make a wish bundle and Aunt Eva Border bundles so just deciding which to do next, the border prints are perfect for this kind of project.
